Politics based on practical and material factors rather than on theoretical or ethical objectives; alt: a usually expansionist national policy having as its sole principle advancement of the national interest.
Usage: Interview with an Iraqi Kurd leader, where the discussion focused on past failures of U.S. administrations to uphold their promises of support for the Kurds during disputes with Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
